🏆Countdown 9: You Don’t Have to Wait to Feel Ready, Start Where You Are
Updated: Sep 26

There is always another level: another fence height, another division, another goal, another version of ourselves and our horses that we imagine will be a little more ready. Horse people are particularly good at finding reasons to wait—one more lesson, one more schooling show, one more month.
Preparation matters. Being ready matters. Perfect doesn’t.
At some point, you have to walk through the in-gate. That idea is built into the Fall Classic jumper schedule, and nowhere is it more obvious than in the Classics.

Your First Classic Can Be Cross Rails
This year, the Classics start at Cross Rails. Not because Cross Rails is where everyone is headed, but because for some riders, Cross Rails is exactly where they are.
It might be the first time putting a whole course together, the first time riding at a rated show, or the first time hearing your number called and walking into the ring knowing this round matters just a little bit more. The fences may be small, but the moment isn’t.
So there will be a Cross Rails Classic. There will be ribbons. And there will be a reason to walk into the ring on Sunday excited about what you are there to do.
As riders progress, the Classics progress with them. Through the levels, Sunday gives riders something to work toward. Some Classics are for ribbons; others carry the prize money established in the Fall Classic program. The height and the challenge change, but the idea doesn’t: there is something to ride toward at the level where you are competing today.

Don’t Wait for Someday
You don’t have to be jumping the biggest fences at the show to be part of the real horse show. You just have to be ready for your fences.
That is what a Classic can do. It gives the weekend a destination. You ride the earlier rounds, learn something, make an adjustment and come back for the round you have been looking forward to.
Success might be a ribbon. It might be riding every distance you planned. It might simply be walking out of the ring thinking, we did it.
Those goals are different. They all count.

The Fall Classic was built for riders who have done the work and are ready to take the next step—even when that step is Cross Rails. So don’t wait for the rider you might be next year. Bring the horse you have, ride the level you are ready for and give yourself something to ride toward.
Start where you are.
