🧡September at Beverly: Where Summer Meets Fall

September sits on the seam of two seasons.The summer calendar hasn’t quite let go, but fall is already underway — and in Virginia, fall is when Hunt Country is at its best.

At Beverly, that means the polo field, competition arenas, school program, and show trailers are all working at once. Horses are competing at home and away. School riders are back in the barn. Polo reaches its highest level of the season. And the calendar begins its steady turn toward the Fall Classic and, eventually, winter in Wellington.

It’s a busy month. It’s also one of our favorites.

Polo Steps Up

September brings some of the best polo of Beverly’s season. The USPA Eastern Challenge, contested at the 12–16 goal level by four teams, brings our highest-rated polo of the summer to the field.

The month also carries the conclusion of the Fauquier Gold Cup 10-Goal presented by The Baldwin Group, alongside the inaugural Late Summer Series presented by Land Rover Chantilly — four Sunday Pro-Ams running August 23, August 30, September 6 and September 13.

The Plains Polo Cup rounds out the fall field.

Fall Showing Starts at Home

Our Fall Series opens Saturday, September 12, with Fall 1. The VHSA Associate show gives our own riders — and our neighbors — an opportunity to compete close to home, collect points and put another useful show on the calendar without making an entire weekend of it.

Then our attention turns to October.

The Beverly Fall Classic, October 3–4

The Beverly Fall Classic, October 3–4, brings USEF-rated hunters and jumpers back to Beverly for a deliberately compact weekend of competition. Fall 2 follows the next Saturday, October 10. Each show serves a different purpose. Together, they give riders options to build a fall program around what their horses actually need.

Back to School — and Back to the Barn

September also brings the Wakefield School Equestrian Program back to full strength. Riders come to Beverly throughout the school week, from students just beginning their education with horses to experienced riders continuing to develop their skills with our professional staff.

Having our own show series makes competition a natural extension of that education. Riders can prepare at home, compete at home and begin building a pathway toward the VHSA Associate Championships.

For developing riders especially, we believe that progression matters. Good riding is built over time — with good instruction, appropriate horses and opportunities to test what has been learned when the rider is ready.

Meet the Horses

Our lease program continues alongside the lesson and school programs, and we have horses available now.

Our Meet the Horses series on the Beverly website is a good place to start. Each horse brings 

something different to the program, and the right match depends on where a rider is today — and where they would like to go next.

September is also the right time to start thinking ahead. A lease begun this fall can become part of a rider’s winter program, whether that means continuing to show here in Virginia or joining the Beverly team in Florida.

Looking South

There is a point every fall when the calendar begins to turn south. For Beverly, that means Wellington.

Our Virginia program continues through the fall, while the show team and a number of our boarders begin preparing for the winter season at our Florida base.

The seasons change, but the program doesn’t. The same emphasis on horse care. The same professional team. The same attention to each horse and rider. And the same goal of creating a program that makes sense — whether the next ring is at Beverly, somewhere else in Virginia, or in Wellington.

September is where those pieces begin to come together.Summer is still on the polo field. Fall has arrived in the show ring. School riders are back in the barn. And winter is beginning to appear on the horizon.
